Victor Ross is the new Chief Medical Officer assigned to the space station Deep Space Five. As an El-Aurian born on Earth in 1792, Victor has seen the planet progress from it's most ancient times. Throughout his life Victor pursed many interests and careers from Medicine to Law to teaching at Starfleet Academy. Following the Borg War, Victor decided to join Starfleet, feeling it was the best way for him to contribute his service to the shattered galaxy.

Interests: Although Victor's primary interest is in socializing he is passionate about Ancient Earth History, Music, and literature; both in written form and in holo-novels. He is particularly fond of Mystery-Novels set in the mid-20th Century on Earth - almost reliving his one-time aspiration to pursue a career in detective work.

Background
Early Life
Chase and Martha Ross were an El-Aurian couple on vacation to Earth in 1701 when their ship crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, leading them to eventually reside in Edinburgh, Scotland. Stranded, the couple did everything they could to fit into Human society. In 1703 Chase joined the British military during the War of Spanish Succession. With a lifetime of experience in various vocations, Chase quickly rose through the military ranks to Major General, commanding the Royal Regiment of Artillery until his retirement in 1748, when King George II bestowed upon him the title of Baron. During his military career, Martha had given birth to 6 daughters, eventually giving birth to Victor in 1792. From his earliest days Victor showed great interest in both music and medicine during his studies with a private tutor, eventually pursuing both interests when he attended the University of Edinburgh in 1832.
The twelve years spent at the university weren't easy: medicine was much tougher work in those days, with little understanding of the human body, brain, and functions. He graduated in 1844 with a doctorate in Medicine and a minor in Music Performance, immediately commissioning into the Royal Army as a field doctor for the next two years.
After his brief military tour, Victor opened up his own private practice in London, England serving as a local doctor. He was well-known locally for his stubborn dedication to his patients, often curing impossible ailments simply by keeping his patient happy. It was during these days that Victor first realized the importance of socialization and camaraderie for human health. During his practice he found that simply talking to his patients, listening to them, and showing compassion was the key to successful medical treatment.
Victor remained in private practice until 1905 when his older sister Kathrine, who he’d always been close with, became ill and summoned him back to Edinburgh to live nearby his childhood home with her and her family. Confident in her recovery, Victor felt that drugs might make her lethargic and depressed. Instead, he encouraged her to go about her day-to-day activities enjoying his company and the natural sunlight. To his great pleasure, she showed slow signs of recovery.
By 1906, Victor began running his private practice through Kathrine’s house while she continued to recover. Within months Katherine’s condition suddenly took a turn for the worse, eventually leading to her death in December of 1906. This took its toll on Victor, who blamed himself. He felt that having sick patients around the house may have allowed pathogens to attack her weakened immune system, directly leading to her demise. He also felt that the absence of drugs in her body added to this inevitability.
Depressed and demoralized, Victor moved to a small cabin in Ireland, retreating from the world and society for several years. He became known as a local hermit, rumors about his presence and mystery whispering around the nearby towns for generations. Eventually Victor caught wind of these rumors through the local news paper which had used him for their front page article. This ignited a sudden and unexpected spark inside him, his spirit returning to him and the numbness that he’d felt finally subsiding. He was happy again.
With his recovered spirit Victor found himself traveling without any real destination. Touring Europe, he spent a great deal of time in both Spain and France, learning the languages and cultures and even pursing some other careers that interested him. Most noteworthy among them: Cook, Primary School Teacher, and even French diplomat to the United States during the first World War. Each time, Victor assumed a new identity, with all the chaos and turmoil on Earth during those days, he found it easy to travel and start anew.
World War II and Eugenics War
Following the first World War, Victor found himself in the United States where he swallowed his past and began another private practice just as Medical Technology was growing. His practice was successful throughout the next several years until 1939 when the United Kingdom declared war on Germany. Having seen the horrors of the first World War, Victor wanted to play his part in the second. Immediately, he enlisted once again into the Royal Army as a Field Medic. As fate would have it, he was stationed in France in 1940 just days before the invasion and subsequent surrender. During this time, Victor served as both a Strategist and a Doctor for the French Resistance, playing his part in a multiple small rescue operations.
The horrors of War took their toll on Victor. After the War's conclusion he decided that he would never serve in a Military position again, no matter the circumstance. Following the war, Victor moved to America once again where he heavily considered pursuing a career in Detective work, his medical practice bringing back too many memories of the war. Unfortunately he never made any headway in chasing this interest, something he would regret later in life. Instead, Victor found himself lecturing History at a small university in New Jersey for almost ten years; his employers unaware of his 'special qualifications' to teach the subject. Often times he would contradict the history books, instead teaching his own experience and recollection of the past. It truly amazed him what details where lost in translation, the small details that seemed so paramount to him.
Victor continued to teach throughout the Cold War, remaining unnoticed by the United States which was actively probing into it's citizen's lives, fearing that they may be Soviet sympathizers. By 1992 Victor found his interest in Earth dwindling. Often times he would gaze at the stars and dream about the other worlds, cultures, and adventures he knew to be out there. This disinterest was short-lived, when by 1993 his main focus was once again medicine. With the Eugenics War raging full-scale at the cost of entire populations, Victor felt the call to help.
Working as a surgeon in New York, Victor became increasing disillusioned about the good in the Human soul - seeing first hand the lives destroyed and lost. In 1996 just prior to the ending of the war, Victor received word that his entire family had been killed during various conflicts in Europe. This sent Victor into a very deep depression. He was now alone on a foreign world without anybody stable in his life. By 1997 Victor had turned to alcohol and tobacco as his only release, drifting on the streets in a stupor for the next few decades.
In 2020 the United States established 'Sanctuary Districts' in response to severe social and economic problems; where the unemployed, the mentally ill, and other outcasts were interned. Unfortunately, this amounted to nothing less to imprisonment. Victor found himself transferred to one of these districts in San Francisco, California.
Although these camps had been established with benevolent intent, conditions inside the camps quickly degenerated. By 2024 over-crowding was a serious issue. Food was rationed, often with shortages. Even worse, medical treatment, both physical and mental was inaccessible, and the threat of violence from other inmates or even the guards was considered a serious threat. In September of 2024, riots that later became known as 'The Bell Riots' broke out in his camp - resulting in inmates taking camp personnel hostage. This ended with the death of several hundred inmates, leading to a public uproar. Soon afterwards, the camps where dissolved and Victor was set free.
Although he was sober, the past four years had only farther disillusioned Victor's faith in humanity. This loss of morale would only increase when in two years, World War III begins over the issue of genetic engineering and Human genome enhancement.
World War III and First Contact
World War III was strictly about survival to Victor. He refused to play any part in it, at one point even allowing a several people to die when a soldier happened into a bar looking for anybody with medical knowledge for several wounded platoon members. This is one decision in Victor's life that he will never discuss, and never forget. He consciously made the choice to refuse aide.. a decision that would haunt him for years to come.
Finding his resolution in alcohol once more, Victor barely survived by luck alone. Having become so demoralized and depressed, Victor found himself in a pseudo-suicidal state of mind. He lost all appreciation for life, regarding his as insignificant and cared little for what happened to him. Traveling the United States from one bar to another, by sheer luck Victor traveled ahead of the attacks avoiding the fate of some 600 Million who lost their lives.
Although unwilling, Victor was eventually forced to sober up after alcohol became increasingly difficult to obtain. Without it, Victor felt worse than ever: He actively contemplated suicide, only holding on long enough to see if The War would kill him first.
As The War came to conclusion in 2053, Victor's own personal demons began to subside. By 2054, Victor had found himself playing Tuba and Trombone in a 'Big Band' at various bars and small venues, giving him the chance to let go of the past and lose himself in the music. He was starting to feel happy with life again, despite everything he'd lived through and experienced.
Over the next ten years Victor had found himself a man reborn, passionate about his music, and even considering going back into the field of Medicine. In 2066 Victor began to study psychology, wanting to help those who were like his former self. Despite his new studies, when news of First Contact reached Victor days after it took place he was ecstatic, marking the final chapter in his emotional recovery. Eager to leave his adopted home for bigger and grander adventures in the galaxy, Victor was eventually able to contact a Vulcan ambassador and privately explain his identity to her. Over time, the Vulcan woman T’Sal would become his close friend and arranged for his transport off of Earth.
During the time before his departure, Victor assisted a young medical student by the name of Pyong Ko in his research in genetic sequencing who he had become acquainted with while studying psychiatry in the United States. Years later Pyong Ko would uncover the sequencing to the inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
Birth of the Federation
In 2101 Victor and his Vulcan comrade T'Sal had traveled to Vulcan so that Victor could start a new life without all the chaos that was going on with reforming Earth. Over the years spent together, Victor had fallen in love with T'Sal, who had already been bonded to another man. She did, at one point in time, express her feelings towards Victor but would not violate her bonding to Setik; a decision that Victor both resented and respected.
On Vulcan, Victor continued his medical training with the healers of Gol, refining their knowledge with his vast experience and learning much from them in return.
In 2161, the same year that the Federation was formed, Victor delivered T'Sal's only child; a daughter named T’Van.
For several years Victor lived with Setik, T'Van, and young T'Sal in Shi’Kahr as their guest-friend, serving as a local healer. Each year, Victor would accompany an old Vulcan teacher named Revlok in leading the boys undergoing the kahs-wan ordeal out into The Forge, often tending to their wounds following the ordeal. Victor is credited for saving many Vulcan men (no longer boys, after all) who would later influence both Vulcan and the Federation. One noteworthy rescue was that of young Sevok son of T'Van (T'Sal's daughter) when he was injured by a wild le-matya which was hiding nearby a scarce water source.
Following T'Sal's death in 2304 at nearly three-hundred years old, Victor decided it was time to return home to Earth.
Much had changed since his last visit to the planet several hundred years before, Earth was no longer the war-shattered wasteland he remembered, but a thriving and hospitable society. Setik, T'Sal's husband, a former Starfleet captain was able to get Victor a position teaching epidemiology, surgery, and emergency medicine at Starfleet Academy.
