Background
Before Foresight
Caroline Walton was born on Earth during the Borg War, and grew up there, watching the world change and not really understanding how fundamental those changes were.
The war ended while she was in high school, and she decided to join Starfleet to find her way off the overcrowded planet her homeworld had become. After graduation, she applied for and was accepted by Starfleet Academy, where she majored in physics. She was considered a talented but unexceptional student, scoring marks in the to 70% of her class, and her attitude was often viewed by her peers and professors alike as being old-fashioned - out of touch with the universe in the time after the Borg invasion.
Temporal Investigations
In her final year at the Academy, Walton requested placement in an apprenticeship program, and was placed aboard the USS Foresight under the command of Captain Eden Enigma. Her first mission with the Temporal Investigations team placed her aboard the runabout Manhattan investigating a wormhole with a notable temporal displacement alongside Lieutenant Taris and Chief Alyssa Caley. It was during this mission that she first encountered the Terran Empire in the form of the scout vessel Sima Yi. The runabout and scout were drawn into the wormhole, and it was in part Walton's resourcefulness that allowed them to escape.
After that mission, most of her work was in the background of the Foresight's science department, from which she watched the command team of the ship work. She acted occasionally as Captain Engima's personal aide, assisting her with small tasks and learning bits of the art of command. However, on the planet Irtok IV, she joined the crew of the Foresight in their investigation of the crashed timeship USS Premonition.
Aboard the timeship, Walton experienced the most trying moments of her life. With ghosts of wars past - the Dominion, the Gorn, the Borg - wandering the halls, pulled into the present by the ship's failing temporal drive, the Terrans attacked. Walton was one of very few to encounter the monstrous Rish warrior known as Mercy and survive the experience - she saw a great many of the people with whom she'd worked for months die in brutal ways, slaughtered by the Rish and by the merciless Terran officers.
She graduated in late 2408, and requested to be stationed aboard the USS Chimera.
USS Chimera
Once aboard the Chimera, Walton's talents were recognized by Captain Carson Reese, and she was appointed one of his two yeomen, alongside Esha Syed, and Reese began work on preparing her for a potential command of her own. Her superior on the ship, Lieutenant Kmallec, was an excellent scientist but suffered from his race's aversion to interaction with groups, leading the duty of representing the department on the bridge and in staff meetings to be delegated to Walton. Prior to graduation, Walton had taken the Bridge Officer Test, qualifying her for bridge command, and Reese made early use of this, passing command of the ship to her when both he and Commander Sevlar were to be off-vessel during the Chimera's encounter with the Aritethi and the Verachians. During her short tenure in command, Caroline managed to spark a diplomatic crisis, resolve that crisis, and discover and make First Contact with perhaps the oldest species Starfleet had yet to meet - the software entities now known colloquially as Walton's Species.
Personality and Talents
Walton is quite unaware of just how exceptional a person she is - she is modest to a fault, but tends to be quite cheerful, and she loves hands-on scientific work and exploration. She isn't much of a soldier, but she is able to keep her wits about her in exceptionally difficult situations. The events on Irtok IV tried her as thoroughly as many older officers were tried by the Borg, and have left her more seasoned than she herself realizes.
She has a strong command presence, though many of her mannerisms are borrowed from Captains Enigma and Reese. She has not developed her own command style, and has no real desire to do so - she sees herself as a scientist, perhaps an explorer, but never a starship captain.
Unfortunately for her, two of Starfleet's most willful and respected commanding officers disagree. Eden Enigma and Carson Reese both intend to place her in the center chair, whether she wants to go there or not.
