USS Columbia NCC 2011-E was the second starship named to be the next Century class starship. The ship's development started in early 2403. After completing her shakedown, she was assigned to be an attached vessel at Deep Space Five, demonstrating Starfleet's commitment to the Second Fleet's success, and putting her in a position where her power could be used as rapid response support for any incidents arising.

Background

With the USS Enterprise-F launched in 2400 and successfully serving Starfleet for three years, the order was given for the second starship to be developed and for construction to begin in 2403.

History

It was decided that as Starfleet was re-exploring the Alpha and Beta Quadrants again, that the ships constructed as Century classes would be named after Stafleet famous crafts that had become legends in their time.

The lead developer position of the project was first offered to Captain Rownen McKensie (XO of USS Voyager NCC-74656-A). McKensie had turn the position down and command of the project was assigned to Captain Rachel Hernandez in 2403. Once the craft had been constructed the captain would assume shakedown command of it.

The Columbia Development Project was assigned to San Francisco Shipyards where construction of the next Century class starship would start officially in 2403. The vessel would be launched by 2405. Columbia's construction was finished sometime in early 2405 and secretly switched places with the Venture Star prototype. She started her shakedown and trial tests in late spring. Captain Hernandez stepped down from command in late 2405.

While undergoing shake down around Sol, USS Columbia and her crew were sent to Alpha Centauri as part of the interdiction Task Force. Upon completion of shakedown, she was posted to the Second Fleet.

Previous ships to bear the name

During the early part of the war then Admiral Edward Jellico was in command of the Sovereign Class USS Columbia, many have speculated this is why he was such a staunch proponent of the Century class development project, some where inside he seems desperate to see another Columbia in the fleet to replace the one lost to the Borg.
