From FEInfobase
The Federation Mobile Infantry (FMI) is a unit of the United Federation of Planets' military that was formed from the amalgamation of the Starfleet Marine Corps and various elements of Starfleet formed in the aftermath of the Borg War in the early 25th century. The FMI was formally created in late August of 2400. A gradual dissolution of the Former Starfleet Marine Corps started at the FMI's founding and did not complete until late 2403 and into early 2404. The slow transition was utilized to better prepare the newly formed armed service and give ample transition time to the absorbed personnel.
The standard combat uniform worn by Federation Mobile Infantry personnel is a two piece uniform with matching undergarment, gloves and boots. The overall color of the combat uniform and boots was gray with white, black, and brown camouflage effects. This uniform was worn in and out of combat.

Mandate
The FMI's mission is to fight and win the Federation's ground wars by providing prompt, sustained planetary dominance across the full range of military operations and spectrum of conflict in support of combatant commanders.
The FMI, as one of the three military departments (FMI, Starfleet and Starfighter Command ) reporting to the Office of the President and Federation Council, is composed of two distinct and equally important components: the active component and the reserve components. The reserve components are the Federation Mobile Infantry and the FMI Reserve Guard.
Regardless of component, The FMI conducts both operational and institutional missions. The operational FMI consists of numbered armies, corps, divisions, brigades, and battalions that conduct full spectrum operations around the Federation. The institutional FMI supports the operational FMI. Institutional organizations provide the infrastructure necessary to raise, train, equip, deploy, and ensure the readiness of all FMI forces. The training base provides military skills and professional education to every Soldier""as well as members of sister services and allied forces. It also allows The FMI to expand rapidly in time of war. The industrial base provides world-class equipment and logistics for The FMI. Infantry installations provide the power-projection platforms required to deploy planetary combat forces promptly to support combatant commanders. Once those forces are deployed, the institutional FMI provides the logistics needed to support them.
Without the institutional FMI, the operational FMI cannot function. Without the operational FMI, the institutional FMI has no purpose.

Enlisted
Enlisted Mobile Infantry in the pay grades E-1 to E-3 make up the bulk of the FMI' ranks. Although they do not technically hold leadership ranks, the FMI' ethos stresses leadership among all MIs, and junior MIs are often assigned responsibility normally reserved for superiors. Those in the pay grades of E-4 and E-5 are non-commissioned officers (NCOs). They primarily supervise junior MIs and act as a vital link with the higher command structure, ensuring that orders are carried out correctly. MIs that hold the pay grade of E-6 or higher are considered Staff Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs), charged with supervising NCOs and acting as enlisted advisors to the command.
The Sergeant Major rank is command-oriented, serving as the senior enlisted Marines in a unit, charged to assist the commanding officer in matters of discipline, administration and the morale and welfare of the unit.
The Sergeant Major of the Mobile Infantry is a unique rank and billet conferred on the senior enlisted MIer of the entire Mobile Infantry, personally selected by the Federation Mobile Infantry Commander in Chief.
