Spacedock I (or Spacedock One, Earth Spacedock, and informally: Spacedock prior to 2398) was the first Spacedock-class starbase to be constructed by the Federation, and was completed by 2285. The station's immense size was unprecedented; it could easily hold a number of Starfleet's Constitution-class vessels and could even accommodate the newer and larger Excelsior-class spaceframes. For over a hundred years, Spacedock was one of the largest constructions in the Federation and easily one of the most recognisable. The design was later copied and used for the construction of a number of other stations, including Starbase 73 and Starbase 133.

Technical Information

Compared to both a spinning top and a mushroom, Spacedock was extremely distinctive in both shape and size. At 5500m tall and with the main dome having a diameter of 3800m at its widest point, it was the largest space station known to exist to the Federation at the time, a sign both of cultural successes and military power.

Refit

In the mid-23rd century, the growing number of Ambassador-class starships, and the success of the prototype USS Galaxy caused a refit to be undertaken in Spacedock's upper dome. The dock doors which had previously only allowed an Excelsior to scrape through were removed, and a new space was cut, allowing for the installation of doors roughly 500m wide when fully open. Though this would allow the new Galaxy-class vessels to enter the upper dome, it did not alter the fact that the interior had been designed to house the much smaller Constitution-class vessels. A number of demolitions took place within the dome, creating more space for the largers vessels to be housed, but even with this, the prescence of a Galaxy-class vessel at Spacedock often meant that more than one other vessel would spend the nights outside as Starfleet made way for the new pride of the Fleet, though newer starbases built upon this design would be constructed with an even larger dome, allowing for more docking space.

Armament

Spacedock One was the most heavily fortified structure in the system at the end of the 24th century, and so served as the CIC (Combat Information Centre) throughout most of the Battle of Sol until its destruction. When fully armed, the station was capable of destroying a Galaxy-class starship in a matter of minutes.

Background Information

The Spacedock was created by ILM designers Dave Carson and Nilo Rodis. It has been suggested by some background staff including Mike Okuda, that Spacedock is over three miles in height, which equates roughly to 4800m+. The above dimensions are based upon the footage used in Star Trek III showing the original Enterprise, rather than 1701-D as extrapolated by EAS. If a deck height of 4 metres is assumed (compromise of Galaxy and Intrepid classes), then the Spacedock would have approximately 1375 decks. Given these numbers, a crew numbering at least ten thousand can be expected, with a capacity to hold at the very least 60-70,000 people.
