Type 9 Shuttle in Service |
The Type 9 Shuttlecraft is a Starfleet auxiliary support craft attached normally to starships and stations to be used for short range missions. This type is designated as a class two shuttlecraft as it mainly built to be operated by two people for minimum duration.
Originally designed in 2368 the type 9’s were introduced as shuttles capable of carrying one or two people across distances of several light years in relative comfort, or of carrying up to four persons on shorter duration missions.
They were introduced in to fleet in 2371 alongside their Type 8 cousins on board the USS Intrepid and later on the USS Voyager where they were tested. One of the features of the type 9’s was the easy methods of constructing and assembling them on a starship outfitted with industrial replicators. Another feature unique to them were the more powerful defence systems available to the design, which included two type V permanent phaser emitters and two micro torpedo launchers.
By 2376 the Type 9 design was a common sight among the Federation, as these shuttles were used successfully during the Dominion War. In 2383 a major overhaul of all shuttlecraft systems were undertaken and many systems on the Type 9 were improved to further extended their usefulness to Starfleet.
