Setup

The Temporal Investigations team is sent by Starfleet to investigate an intermittent wormhole in the Serpentis sector. The wormhole, which has a variable temporal displacement between its ends, has been accidentally entered by a merchant ship, the Roll of the Dice, which was a converted Klingon B'Rel-class Bird of Prey. It is also being studied by the Vulcan science vessel Eigenstate.

Lieutenant Commander Azrim Tain and Ensign Noran Gyle are assigned to the Eigenstate to help them interpret data on the wormhole, which the Temporal Investigations runabout USS Manhattan is sent to investigate more closely, crewed by Chief Alyssa Caley, Lieutenant Taris, and Lieutenant K'Vack. Captain Eden Enigma and Lieutenant Feathers are sent to the Roll of the Dice to question those aboard about their experience in the wormhole and look through sensor logs, while Ensign Reino Manak is sent to the merchant vessel to help its overburdened medical staff treat injuries incurred in the wormhole.

The Terran Empire

As the investigation gets underway, however, three ships appear - scout ships from the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance. Three vessels - the ITV Zhou You, the ITV Sima Yi, and the ITV Zhuge Liang, on a mission to both test the Alliance's technology to send ships across the divide between the universes and to discover the status of the Federation - arrive, which destabilizes the wormhole. The Manhattan and the Sima Yi were drawn into the wormhole and severely damaged when the Sima Yi's helmsman attempted to use the ship's warp drive to escape. A chroniton pulse from the wormhole flung the Roll of the Dice and the Zhou Yu to the Borg Universe, while the Eigenstate was left alone to face the far more powerful Zhuge Liang, commanded by Eden Enigma (Mirror).

The two ships in the wormhole began to attempt to find a way to escape, while those in the Borg Universe sought a way to return to the Prime Universe. Meanwhile, the Eigenstate and the Zhuge Liang began a long, dangerous battle, with the Terran Captain Enigma seeking to gain control of the science ship's computers to download their databanks or to take the senior staff hostage for interrogation. In the end, all parties succeeded - the wormhole was reopened, the two ships sent to the Borg Universe returned to the Prime Universe, and the Zhuge Liang acquired the databanks of the Eigenstate. Their mission complete, the Alliance ships returned to their universe.

Background

This episode was the beginning of the Mirror Universe arc, a planned multiple-mission, very likely multi-season, story arc for Star Trek: Temporal Investigations. It introduced the Mirror crew.
