History

Early Life: 2215-2293

Noran Gyle was just fifty years old when the Borg assimilated his home world in 2265, still a child by El Aurian standards. He was 78 when the USS Enterprise-B rescued him from the Nexus energy ribbon in 2293. Feeling an immense debt to the Federation, he immediately enrolled in Starfleet Academy upon arrival on Earth, casting aside his race's normally passive attitude to the universe.

Starfleet Career, Pre-War: 2293-2382

Noran Gyle graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2297 with a dual degree in astrophysics and probability mechanics. Over the next few decades, from 2297 to 2335 Gyle served on a number of science vessels, mostly studying temporal anomalies and rising to the rank of captain. In 2335, Gyle's work received enough attention that he was offered a position teaching temporal theory at Starfleet Academy. He immediately accepted the position, retiring from command. He remained at Starfleet Academy for 47 years, until the beginning of the Borg War.

Hellfire Project: 2382-2389

When news reached Earth of the rising Borg aggression, Noran Gyle immediately transferred to the Hellfire Torpedo project as a consultant. When the project was scrapped in 2389, he remained in weapons development, accepting command of a Nova Class starship, the USS Vindicator, to serve as his personal testbed for a new weapon system.

The USS Vindicator and the Last Stand at Sol: 2389-2398

The prototype of Gyle's new weapon system was still under testing when the Borg arrived in the Sol system in 2398. Nonetheless, the USS Vindicator took part in the battle. On the third day, the Vindicator brought its secret weapon to bear: a weapon system integrating a finely tuned sensory array, tracking computer, charged chroniton field, and torpedo delivery system resulting in the capability of sending a torpedo through time and space to a point where the target vessel did not yet have its shields raised. In the course of the final battle at Sol, the USS Vindicator fired all five of its quantum torpedoes through this weapon system, destroying five Borg Cubes. In the aftermath of the Battle of Sol, Starfleet Command quietly decomissioned the Vindicator and offered Gyle a place in the admiralty. When Noran declined the honor and attempted to publish a study on the application of temporal theory in weapons development, Starfleet Command had him quietly stripped of his command and put under house arrest, lest the secret of the Vindicator get out. The only note of why Gyle was discharged from Starfleet was that he had broken the Temporal Directive.

Exile from Duty: 2398-2406

Noran Gyle was placed under house arrest following his expulsion from Starfleet. He spent the eight years from 2398 to 2406 tutoring children in the sciences and serving as a social worker. In 2403 he acquired his counselors' certification.

Starfleet Temporal Investigations: 2407+

In 2406 Noran Gyle was contacted with an offer from one Captain Eden Enigma. Noran would be reinstated in Starfleet as an ensign under the conditions that he accepted a position on the science staff of the USS Foresight and never touch anything capable of manipulating, emitting, creating, or destroying chroniton particles without the express sanction of the Foresight's senior staff. Bored of civilian life, Noran Gyle eagerly accepted the offer.

Psychological Profile

Unlike many of his fellow El Aurians, Noran Gyle has never been married, nor developed intimate emotional attachments to anyone. Records dating from shortly after his graduation from Starfleet Academy note a number of minor love affairs, but the records cease after Noran's rise to the rank of captain and he is not recorded as the father of any children. Rather than cultivate meaningful relationships with people, Noran sees himself as being married to his work. His record is peppered with various professional friendships. He was well liked by those he worked with on the Hellfire Torpedoes project and his cew aboard the USS Vindicator idolized him to the point that Starfleet Command made a point of separating the entirity of that ship's senior staff when the ship was decomissioned.

As far as Noran's ethics go, there are little evidence for the argument that his values are anything less than a good Starfleet officer's, except for a note that he took very well to his work in weapons development. It is also worth noting, however, that only recent in Noran's case history has he been put in a situation that would challenge his professional ethics, and that much of his record during the Borg War is classified.

Family

  • Mother: Not on record, presumed deceased or assimilated.
  • Father: Not on record, presumed deceased or assimilated.

Mirror Universe

In the Mirror Universe Noran Gyle's counterpart holds the (mostly) honourary rank of general in the Klingon branch of the Alliance space fleet. Formerly the director of research and development of the Alliance's Qo'nos shipyards. Noran has had a considerably long and colorful career in the Alliance, serving along with the majority of his species as spies on the Terran Empire in the decades just preceeding its fall and, much later, commanding a B'rel class Bird of Prey to direct espionage efforts against the Terran Rebellion. Recently General Gyle left his post at the Qo'nos shipyards to participate in the Terran's plan to invade the Federation universe.
