There have been two ships named USS Equinox since 2370. The quote on its dedication plaque is "The night of time far surpasseth the day." by Sir Thomas Browne.

NCC 72381

A Nova Class starship and under the command of Captain Rudolph Ransom. The ship was on a routine science mission near the Bajoran Badlands in 2370 where it was reported missing. Five years later the Equinox was found by the USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant. It too had been pulled away from Federation space by the Caretaker. The ship was later destroyed after performing inhuman experiments on nucleogenic creatures. Only five crewmembers were saved by Voyager.

NCC 72381-A

In 2394 the third Nova Refit Class ship was ready for launch and was named Equinox-A. Command was given to the former chief engineer of the first Equinox, Marla Gilmore. The ship was assigned to the defence of Earth and in 2400 fully assigned to the First Fleet. In late 2402 the Equinox-A led a convoy of ships to Deep Space One as the station was evacuated to assist in defence of the abandoned station and Ba'ku (DS1: "The Miracle Workers")..
