Redevelopment of Akira Class
By 2383 the Akira class starship had been in service to Starfleet as a frontline heavy combat cruiser and fighter carrier for nearly twenty years. The ships of this class had become popular sights among Federation space. It was only fitting that by its twentieth anniversary the ship receive a redevelopment of its systems to compete with the newest technology in the galaxy.
Recent breakthroughs and discoveries with more efficient power and computer systems allowed for the next batch of starships to be built the latest technologies on offer to Starfleet. The Akira class was one of many old classes to receive them as Utopia Plantia and other Federation shipyards started construction on the next group of Akiras to be launched.
