There have been two ships named USS Mikhail Kalashnikov since 2379. Both ships have recieved the nickname of MK their crews. The vessel was named after a famous people from Earth's past who was a Russian weapon designer during the late twentieth century during an era called the "Cold War". It was ironic that the plaque motto of both MK's reads: "It Is An Unfortunate Fact That We Can Secure Peace Only By Preparing For War..." said by John F. Kennedy the President of the United States of America who was seen as the opposition to Soviet Russia during the "Cold War".

NCC 74477

The original Mikhail Kalashnikov was a Defiant Class ship assigned to the Fourth Fleet. It was placed in to Task Force 21 to assist with the further placement of Starfleet forces along the border of the C'Hakilian Empire. The ship was originally commanded by Commander Jenna Voss in early 2379 and command was transferred to Nikolai Kastrovich. The ship was later transferred as a support vessel to Kovar colony in late 2380. The ship served in the Kovar Retreat of 2382 before being destroyed by the Borg attempting to escort refugees from the Romulan Star Empire entering Federation space.

NCC 74477-A

The second starship to be nicknamed MK was the prototype for a new uprated version of the Defiant Class. Launched on 27th August 2392 the ship was commanded by Captain Sean Thompson and was assigned to help in the defence of Starbase 565 before its destruction. The ship was later re-assigned to forces to defend Earth. In 2399 it survived the Battle of Sol and was assigned to the First Fleet. In 2402 it visited Deep Space One to bring a secret message from Starfleet Command to Captain Zack Marshall-Bennet about the Federation Council's plan to use the metaphasic properties of the ice rings around Ba'ku to help restore Earth to its former glory.
