The USS Challenger (NCC-71099) is a Galaxy-class starship under the command of Captain Geordi La Forge. The vessel is currently assigned to the First Fleet and aids in the defence of Earth and other neighbouring systems. The vessel has remained in active duty for thirty years now. It had has undergone a number of upgrades and refits during its service history.
The dedication plaque reads: "I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth...and touched the face of God." a quote by John Gillespie Magee, Jr, an American poet. These exact words were said by American President Ronald Reagan in a speech to America after the tragic destruction of the Earth space shuttle Challenger. The President was dedicating his thoughts and memory of those astronauts that died in the accident.
Service Record
During the Battle of Sol in 2398, the Challenger was a group leader and one of the few ships in Strike Force Alpha to survive the entirety of the fight.
In 2400, the Challenger was assigned to salvaging and relief missions in the Sol System. In Lunar orbit, they not only found survivors on the surface, but one survivor in the wreck of a Borg cube orbiting the planet. This was LtCmdr. Kroe'nn, former CO of the USS Armistrice, who beamed his crew onto the wreck, when his ship was destroyed during the final battle for Earth in 2398. Kroe'nn was the sole survivor.
Two years later the vessel led a small task group consisting mainly of Jem'Hadar attack vessels to tow a derelict Son'a Collector from Denobula to Earth (DS1: "Just In Time").
In early 2404, the San Francisco Chronicle wrongly reported that the Challenger was creating an action adventure holo-novel whilst scanning the field. (SFC: "A Tale of Two Cities")
Current Crew
- Captain Geordi La Forge - Commanding Officer
- Commander Robin Leflar - Executive Officer
Past Crewmembers
- Lieutenant Anthony Brooks - began as the Challenger's Head Cartographer in 2377 as a Lieutenant j.g. Took temporary charge of the Operations Department in 2382 following a viral outbreak onboard and demonstrated considerable talents in the role, despite it covering the entire sector in its scope. Following this display, he was promoted to full Lieutenant and shortly after, was transferred to the USS Hood as their Operations Manager.
