Career

Before 2369

During the Occupation of Bajor Kira lived most of her childhood with her father and two younger brothers in a labour camp after her mother was taking away to be a comfort woman on Terok Nor. When she was old enough she was part of the Bajoran Resistance and part of the Shakaar resistance cell. She became quite the tactician after learning everything from her fellow resistance fighters and learning in the field.

2369-2375

After the Cardassian’s withdraw from Bajor the Bajoran Provisional Government was established as well as the Bajoran Militia. Kira was made a Major and assigned to Terok Nor as its Executive Officer and Bajoran Liaison Officer after the Federation came in to administrate the station on behalf of the Provisional Government. For seven years Kira helped Bajor in rebuilding from her position on the base. At first she had some disagreements with Commander Benjamin Sisko, the Starfleet officer assigned to command the base. She soon realised that Bajor needed the Federation and after five years was proud of the work that both the Federation & the Bajorans had achieved for Bajor. Kira became Sisko’s right hand woman and the two became quite close as friends. She like many other Bajorans believed that he was their Emissary. Her time on the station helps her develop her perception on life after the trauma’s she went through from the occupation. She forms close friendships with many of the station’s senior staff and others. Her long time friendship with station’s security chief Odo develops and in 2374 the two become lovers. This is after years of denial from Odo and Kira’s side in regards to their feelings for each other. During the start of the Dominion War Kira is left to represent the Bajoran Government to the Dominion after they capture DS9 from the Federation. However feeling helpless in not being involved with the fighting against the Dominion she leads a resistance cell on the station to thwart the Dominion’s plan of conquering the Alpha Quadrant. Her resistance cell aides the Federation in retaking the station, preventing the Dominion from getting re-enforcements from the Gamma Quadrant and pushing the Dominion in to Cardassian space. In 2375 she was promoted to Colonel and later on in the year (during the) she received a Starfleet commission of Commander and led a small team, consisting of herself, Odo and Garak behind enemy lines to teach Legate Damar and his Cardassians resistance fighters to drive the Dominion out from Cardassia Prime and other Cardassian worlds. Her mission was a success and after the end of the war she returned to Deep Space Nine to bear witness to the Dominion’s surrender. After Captain Sisko left the linear realm to be with the Bajoran Prophets in the Celestial Temple Kira was made commander of the station.

2375-2380

Kira’s command of DS9 brought quite a lot of controversy from Starfleet Command who wanted another Starfleet officer to run the base. However Bajoran First Minister, Shaakar Edon a close friend of the colonel’s reminded Starfleet that the base was Bajoran and knew for a fact that the colonel had the confidence of both the Starfleet and Bajoran personnel assigned to the station. Admiral William Ross backed this up and the matter was quickly dropped. Under Shaakar’s insistences Deep Space Nine is designated the official coordinator of relief efforts from Bajor to Cardassia Prime, with Kira regularly meeting with officials from the Federation, Klingon Empire, Romulan Star Empire as well as the Cardassian Union.

At the same of providing aide to the Cardassians, DS9 undergoes a series of refits and upgrades to the station’s infrastructure and defences. The workload begins to pressurise Kira and many of her senior staff become concerned for her well being as she starts to doubt her ability to command DS9.

In April of 2376 a surprise attack from three Dominion attack ship cripples the station, killing hundreds and threatening the fragile new peace that exists with the Dominion. As Kira tries to re-establish order on the station she has to deal with a grisly murder of a Bajoran Prylar called Istani Reyla. Her murder was over an old Bajoran text filled with prophecies from the unorthodox Ohalu sect. Kira is pushed in to the centre of a possible new war with the Dominion, as well religious tensions on her homeworld. It is discovered that the Bajoran Vedak Assembly sent someone to kill the Prylar in preventing her from releasing the Ohalu text to the Bajoran people. Disgusted by this Kira uploads the prophecies on to the Bajoran communication network making them public. This creates a lot of uproar on Bajor but Kira also has to cope with Jem’Hadar intruders on the station. The Jem’Hadar overload the station’s fusion core and Kira is forced to eject the core, rendering DS9 disabled. She also gains help from a Jem’Hadar called Taran’atar sent to stop the other “rogue Jem’Hadar by Odo. Taran’atar explains exactly what happened with the “rogue Jem’Hadar to Kira as an allied task force arrives at the station to launch a retaliation against the Dominion. He gives her proof with a message from Odo. Odo tells her that he has sent this Jem’Hadar as a cultural observer and to follow out whatever she tells him, as well to pass a message to the Federation and its allies that they can return to the Gamma Quadrant to explore as long as they don’t violate Dominion space. Kira also gains a new first officer, Commander Elias Vaughn who also aided her in stopping the “rogue Jem’Hadar. Kira has a vision from the recently recovered Orb of Memory which explains to her the Ohalu prophecies including one that is directed at the unborn child of Captain Sisko and Kasidy Yates-Sisko. She later reveals to others the location of previously unknown catacombs beneath the holy Bajoran city of B’hala, in which shows the many Bajorans who over the millennia gave their lives to protect the Ohalu prophecies. For punishment in placing her own judgement regarding the spiritual well being of Bajor above the Vedak Assembly the colonel is attainted and cast out of the Bajoran community faith. She starts to feel how difficult her official removal from her faith is on her life. Her responsibilities as commanding officer of DS9 isn’t affected as she approves plan to restore the station by her Chief of Operations, Lieutenant junior grade Nog.

A month later Kira leads a joint Starfleet-Bajoran task force to evacuate the independent human colony of Europa Nova after an Iconian gateway opens in its system and high amounts of theta radiation begins to pour in through it. The task force is successful in evacuating the colonists back to the station and Bajor. At this time too Kira opens up an unlikely dialogue with her former enemy’s cousin, Gul Macet bloody relative to Gul Dukat. Macet and his vessel assist the allies in evacuating the colony. During this incident Kira alongside her new cultural observer from the Gamma Quadrant, Taran’atar are forced to take their runabout in to the Iconian gateway which is plaguing Europa Nova to prevent a large amount of the radiation from pouring in. They enter the Delta Quadrant to find a Malon freighter heavily disabled and invaded by a Hirogen hunter. Taran’atar fights the Hirogen while Kira prepares their runabout to take the brunt of the theta radiation with its enhanced shields. They are successful but only Taran’atar escapes and returns to the Alpha Quadrant as Kira is forced to take shelter on a nearby uninhabited planet. She is saved later by the appearance of another Iconian gateway on the planet’s surface. As she passes through the gateway she finds herself back on Bajor however thrown over thirty thousand years in to the planet’s past and stuck in a battle between waring nations. This incident soon makes her challenge her self doubts of commanding DS9, once again another Iconian gateway opens for her on Bajor and she is returned to DS9 by the help from an Iconian outpost warden. While there the warden closes down the gateway that heads in to Europa Nova and removes the theta radiation from the system. However Kira is unsure if her experience from Bajor’s past really happened or if she was sent a vision from the Prophets.

Soon talks between the Federation and Bajoran Government begin for Bajor’s petition to join the Federation start. A summit is planned to be held between delegates on DS9. Weeks after talks on the station First Minister Shaakar announces publicly that the Bajor’s application to join the Federation has been accepted. However at the same time Cardassia attempts to open peace talks with Bajor but for some reason they are scattered by Bajor’s second minister Asarem Wadeen. Kira confronts the minister over the termination of the peace talks with Cardassia, who in returns reveals that Shakaar ordered her to do away with the talks. Kira talks to Shakaar who’s behaviour becomes increasingly irregular and uncharacteristic of him. Kira is unable to expose his “change of heart without putting Bajor’s entry in to the Federation at risk. Talks continue on the station and as Shakaar is about sign the treaty documents he is shot dead by a Trill delegate. The whole station becomes chaos as the assailant flees the station. The USS Gryphon believes it finds the murderer on a cloaked ship heading for Trill, Kira joins the Gryphon crew on orders by the new Bajoran First Minister Asarem Wadeen. However after Kira leaves the station it is found that in fact Shakaar had been infected with the same parasite who others of its kind attempted to take over Starfleet Command Headquarters many years ago and was stopped by the crew of the USS Enterprise-D. The assassinator is found hiding on the station and informs the station that the parasites’ intentions are to use the Gryphon in attacking Trill. One of Starfleet’s delegates on board the station, Fleet Admiral Leonard James Akaar contacts Kira aboard the Gryphon and explains what is happening. Kira leads a mutiny against the Gryphon’s commanding officer, Captain Elaine Mello whose XO believes has been taken over by a parasite. However Kira is mislead by Commander Alejandro Montenegro, the Gryphon’s first officer who is the true host of the parasite on the ship. The crew of the Gryphon abandons the ship just leaving just Kira, Mello and several other senior staff to stop Montenegro. During the fight Mello is killed, and hands command of her ship to Kira who is later successful in stopping the parasite attack against Trill. Kira is informed by Trill’s Defence Ministry that the parasites are sworn enemies of the Trill symbiots and are a grave security threat to Bajor and the entire Federation.

Returning to DS9, a huge system wide lockout is put on place of the Bajoran system to prevent any more incursion from the parasites. Weeks of testing, examining and security pre-cautions the parasite’s numbers are reduced by Starfleet intervention. However martial law is declared on Bajor as the parasites take over small number of the civilian population. The parasites soon infect a large amount of the Bajoran Militia and begin to take over the government. Kira who returns to Bajor with help from her senior staff finds the mother host and exposes it to the powerful pagh from all the recovered Bajoran Orbs. The mother host is killed and the parasite threat removed from the Alpha Quadrant. Kira’s action also marks the return of her former commanding officer, Captain Sisko. The two quickly find Kasidy, Sisko’s wife who with other members of the Sisko family was taken hostage by the parasites. Kasidy gives birth and is safely returned to the station with the rest of the Sisko family.

Bajor finally joins the Federation and Kira is made a Captain in Starfleet as the Bajoran Militia is incorporated in to Starfleet.

Kira’s command of DS9 for the next three years went from strength to strength as Bajor became one of the Federation’s most important members in the rebuilding phase as well as the re-exploration of the Gamma Quadrant. Kira represented the Federation in several first contact situations with races from the Gamma Quadrant as well being the instrument in improving relations with Cardassia.

2380-2388

On May 12, 2380 a lone Dominion attack ship entered the Alpha Quadrant via the wormhole with a Jem’Hadar crew escorting a founder, Odo. Odo came on board the station and informed Kira that he had come to offer lasting peace to the Federation and Klingons from the Dominion. Kira felt that Odo’s offer was genuine and petitioned with support from many others in the fleet for the Federation to accept. Federation officials accepted the offer with open arms however Starfleet was uneasy but accepted a meeting between top Federation and Dominion leaders. The Klingons were less than hopeful, but Chancellor Martok saw the possibilities of peace with the once-hated foe, as well as the inherent dishonor if he didn't accept. Five days later a combined Federation-Klingon task group arrived at DS9 and were escorted through the Gamma Quadrant towards a Dominion starbase. Kira with several members from her senior staff joined the Federation delegates on the USS Enterprise-E. Captain Kira took an important role on behalf of the Federation in the talks due to her relationship with Odo. Many of her colleagues including Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Admiral Ross and Federation President Crimzar Ogar were impressed with her attitude and abilities. She was awarded the Starfleet Distinguished Service Medal as well the Presidential Medal of Serenity.

On their return to the Alpha Quadrant the new Cardassian leader Garak was enraged. He felt that both the Federation and Klingons were turning their backs on the Cardassian people. Starfleet assigned the duty of trying to assure Garak that the new accords would benefit all to Kira. She met with Garak whom she had fought alongside with against the Dominion during the Cardassian resistance. On some levels she was able to get to him but several of his own aides and ambassadors were still outraged. Garak left DS9 still unconvinced what Kira was trying to say to him was truthful. He publicly criticized the treaty when he returned home. Kira felt she had the chance to prevent any damage to Federation-Cardassian relations but she believed she failed the Federation and herself for the first time since taking command of DS9.
