Summary

After saving the crew of the USS Achilles both ships finally arrive at Verex III. They are greeted by an unfriendly welcoming party, five Nausicaan raiders. However Starfleet Intelligence had been able to determine several weaknesses in the attacking ships from previous engagement. The two Starfleet ships easily defend themselves, allowing Fleet Captain Bennet to negotiate a cease fire with the Nausicaan leader. The Nausicaan leader tells him what he knows about the Klingon Empire, apparently now only a small number of systems who are surviving together. He suggests to Bennet to head to Verex III and meet with an Orion women called Nicovaler.

The captain leads an away team down to the planet to a trading outpost where they enter the corporation ran by Nicovaler, called The Green Grace Garnish. While there they watch an interesting show done by the The Green Hot Girls, it is clear this business is a purely an entertainment establishment for anyone to enjoy themselves in. Bennet and Commander T’Val meet with a Tellarite freighter captain called Graarg who believes that by helping the Starfleet officers out in introducing them to Nicovaler they will aide in removing the Orion Syndicate presence from the Verex system and the Borderland region for good. They assure him they are not part of an invasion force sent by the Federation, but he has a feeling they will end up removing the Syndicate one way or another. He speaks with Nicovaler who will only meet with Bennet on their own. The captain, even though told by his officers not to proceed alone follows Graarg and meets with Nicovaler.

Bennet and Nicovaler meet and soon come to a deal. She tells him about Yupa the Nausicaan man the captain had dealt with earlier upon their arrival in the system. Apparently Yupa is the leader of the remnants of the Orion Syndicate and has close ties with General Kohlart, the Klingon who led the attack against Deep Space One several months ago. Nicovaler is willing to provide Starfleet Intelligence with all the information she has and can gain about the Klingon Empire, as well as give the Federation a voice on the Verex Trade and Commerce Comission. In return Bennet has to agree to destroy the Orion syndicate base near to Verex and assist in rescuing her sister D’Neshka who was kidnapped by Yupa months ago. Reluctantly he agrees to the deal, knowing that by agreeing to it they would be removing a major threat to Federation security for once and for all as well as gaining an ally close to the Klingon Empire. Nicovaler returns with the away team back to the Enterprise.

Days later a plan is finally formalised after Bennet makes some uneasy allies with merchant and freighter captains in the system who agree to support him in his actions and loyalty to the Federation. Both the Enterprise and Achilles engage the Orion base and its defence ships and are able to get a team on board to retrieve D’Neshka as well as the entire station’s computer database.

After the battle both Bennet and Nicovaler have a discussion in his ready over the costs of their success in removing the Orion Syndicate. She thanks him for his efforts and leaves him with information which will enable him and his crew to find out more about the Klingons.

Once she leaves he enters the bridge and orders for the ship to lay in a course for Archer IV.

Memorable Quotes

“Starfleet. ”
“Yes.”
“I shall not surrender.”
“I’m not in the mood in taking prisoners at the moment.”
“Then why are you here?”
“We’re looking for information.”
“You have two powerful ships under your command. Why should I believe you?”
“Because if I wanted to blow you and your other ships up I would have done already. Now will you stand down and let us pass?”
“Do I have choice?”
“As I said I’m not in the mood in taking prisoners nor am I in the mood in mercy killing at the moment.”

- Nausicaan leader & Zack Marshall-Bennet,

“Did you enjoy the entertainment captain? ” (referencing the dance of The Green Hot Girls)
Inclines his head slightly, “It was” pauses, “entertaining. ”

- Nicovaler & Zack Marshall-Bennet

“Wasn’t it your own president who spoke the words the needs of the many outweigh the needsof the few? You’re about to enter regions of space where a lot of what you will see and do won’t make you happy captain but you have to accept the consequences and outcomes that the Borg War brought. Many civilisations lay out there in ruins and people are doing whatever it takes to survive. You bring with yourself this ship which is a symbol of hope and peace. But to gain those sometimes you’re gonna have to wrestle with your conscience.”

- Nicovaler to Zack Marshall-Bennet after saving her sister and removing the Orion Syndicate from the Borderland for good.
