Summary

Archer IV, a planet that was known for its beauty and being discovered in the 22nd Century by Humanity is now in the centre of a political and tactical incursion which will turn and change the Federation’s relations with their former allies within the Klingon Empire.

The Enterprise and the Achilles both approach the Archer system and are automatically engaged by several Klingon ships, under the command of a Captain Kroljha of the Kortar. Starfleet Intelligence had received rumours that the system was being plagued by the Klingons, pirates and other merchants due to a large amount of debris coming from the destruction of a massive Borg armada which was destroyed in the system. The ships are aided by another Starfleet ship, an Akira Class ship called the USS Thanet under the command of Captain Norvo Pren. The Thanet escorts the two ships to Starbase 18, a Spacedock Class station in orbit of Archer IV’s second moon.

While docked at Starbase 18 the crew meet with key personnel from the station who inform them of what has happened in the Archer system since the Federation lost contact. The Borg did attack the system and attempted to assimilate the planet; however thanks to the large defence network deployed on the planet the entire Borg armada was destroyed. Since then the outer sections of the system have become a loitering place for pirates and most recently the Starfleet forces in the system have been noticing an increase in Klingon ships entering the system. They fear the worse and feel that is the start up of a possible Klingon invasion in to the system.

Fleet Captain Zack Marshall-Bennet visits Archer Four with Captain Reynolds to meet with the governor of the colony. Governor Charles Keaton requests that both ships remain at Archer Four to assist in preparations to defend against the upcoming feared Klingon invasion of his world. However Rear Admiral Nancy Harper, the highest ranking Starfleet officer that survived the Borg attack against the Archer system, warns both captains that deep space reconnaissance probes sent from Starbase 18 have picked up a large cluster of warp signatures on the far edges of the Azure Nebula, possible an invasion force, consisting of more then a hundred vessels. Bennet and Reynolds return to the Enterprise and petition for Starfleet to send re-enforcements to the system in preparation of a possible attack. Admiral Paris agrees to the request and sends a relief task force consisting mainly of over twenty Dominion ships to the Archer system, however the Federation Council wants the Enterprise to go to the Azure Nebula and attempt to make diplomatic contact with the Klingons and resolve the situation without any more weapons fire. Leaving the Achilles behind to prepare for the arrival of the relief force, Enterprise warps off towards the nebula to attempt peaceful contact once and for all.

Fleet Captain Bennet, Commander T'Val and Lieutenant Moran met with a Klingon general, called Lavok and discussed the possibilities of ending current hostilities within the nebula on board the Enterprise. However the Klingons only use the meeting a diversion while they finish preparing their forces for the attack against the Archer system. The invasion force moves out of the nebula straight for Archer IV with the Enterprise in hot pursuit.

Returning to the system Enterprise assists the combined Federation-Dominion forces in defending against the Klingon armada. However during the middle of the fight the Archer IV defence network comes online, before the Klingons have a chance to react the majority of their armada is obliterated by Nadion pulse cannons being fired from the planet’s surface. The armada retreats from the system providing a victory for the Federation.

Later on in the day Admiral Paris contacts Fleet Captain Bennet informs him that the attack against Archer IV was only a decoy, the real target the Klingons went for was Vulcan.

Memorable Quotes

“The Federation was not about wars before the Borg and if I have anything to do about it, they won’t be AFTER the Borg. This is a time to cement old friendships and bring back powerful allegiances, not to have the quadrant divided greater than ever. We have to take this opportunity. We have to go out their, Enterprise and Achilles together as a show of strength and we will tell everyone out there that we are the Federation. We will not go silently in to the night; we will not go without a fight! But, we will also tell them that we know what is right and that my friends and colleagues, that is the hand of peace.”

- Johnathan Marshall-Bennet,
