Starfleet faces a crisis of identity with the loss of heroes such as Picard and Janeway and seeks to counter that by building up its fighter squadrons in the press, specifically the Angry Apes of Zephyria Base on Mars. By lauding the squadron's new leader, Major Joseph Ryan, and supplying him with the best pilots available, they hope to create a fighting force that not only protects the system's inhabitants, but instills pride in them as well.

Summary

Arriving on Mars, Joseph Ryan finds himself in charge of Starfleet's latest venture, an elite starfighter squaron. The personalities of his new pilots are as different from standard Fleet officers as their roles and quickly cause contention on the ground. Ryan's new executive officer is the half-El-Aurian Danielle Ferris who looks and acts like a child but flies like a top-ace. The two start off on the wrong foot when their contrasting personalities and egos collide.
Meanwhile, Ryan's wingmate is the veteran pilot Cameron Ferguson; a Human with an unexplained absense of five years and a lack of confidence in his own skills.
