The original Mikhail Kalashnikov was a Defiant Class ship assigned to the Fourth Fleet. It was placed in to Task Force 21 to assist with the further placement of Starfleet forces along the border of the C'Hakilian Empire. The ship was originally commanded by Commander Jenna Voss in early 2379 and command was later transferred to Nikolai Kastrovich. The ship was later transferred as a support vessel to Kovar colony in late 2380. The ship served in the Kovar Retreat of 2382 before being destroyed by the Borg attempting to escort refugees from the Romulan Star Empire entering Federation space.
