Returning to the station, Captain Bennet is forced to take on his younger brother before he creates an interstellar diplomatic blunder with Yridian refugees. However politics begin to take over the station as more and more problems arise with other species nearby…
Summary
With the USS Tokyo secure and the Yridians preparing to head back to Earth the crew slowly start to unwind and take some well deserved R&R. The remaining Son’a on Ba’ku open a dialogue with the station’s chief diplomatic officer, Lieutenant Kentra Donrav in attempts to become members of the Federation.
Admiral Tom contacts the captain to give him the crew’s new orders. The Federation Council wants a full assessment of the Federation Colony on Ba’ku. However on the other side of the galaxy trouble is starting…
Captain Geordi La Forge, under the orders of the Federation Council is towing a derelict Son’a Collector back to Earth after it was found by the Denobulans. La Forge’s ship the USS Challenger soon leaves Denobula on its return trip home. A month later and after the Collector arrives in the Sol sector many top Federation and Starfleet officials begin to suspect trouble arising on the horizon. As rumours begin to pass through the corridors of Starfleet Command Headquarters and the Federation Council Halls the man who maybe behind the order of re-using the Collector again is none other then the Vice President of the Federation, Edward Jellico. Top Starfleet officials meet covertly to discuss their current dilemma and how they will respond to it.
Back on Deep Space One the crew continue with their assignment as the get to know the colonists and what they have been up to during the Borg War. Before long a secret message from Fleet Admiral Jean-Luc Picard is received by Captain Bennet from the skipper of the USS Mikhail Kalashnikov. Picard informs Bennet about the Collector and its possible intentions to be used to collect Metaphasic Particles from the rings of the Ba’ku homeworld. Soon enough Deep Space One receives its orders from the Federation Council to begin evacuation of the Federation Colony and the Ba’ku people in preparation for the Collector’s arrival. The Federation Council tells the crew that the metaphasic radiation from the Briar Patch is going to be collected to help restore Earth from its ecological and environmental problems. The Federation Council believes the population of Ba’ku maybe in danger as the effects from the collection process may harm any biological tissue on the planet. However with the message from Picard the crew all know the radiation from the rings orbiting Ba'ku are the only particles that could help rejuvenate any organic matter. The captain believes that the Federation Council intends on getting everyone off the planet and at the last moment collects the radiation from the planet. If the radiation was put in to Earth's atmosphere it would reverse the condition of the planet within moments. The pollution in the sky, in the oceans and land would instantly be removed. Natural resources would regenerate and the planets organic matter, planets, wildlife would all be restored.
Bennet is quickly relieved of command of Deep Space One as he starts to prevent the relocation efforts from going ahead. With a majority of his crew with him Zack takes the USS Enterprise-F back to Earth to reason with the Federation President Spock. After arrival at Earth Bennet is arrested for disobeying orders. However Spock is lenient and allows Bennet to justify his actions in front of the Council. Jellico is outraged and protests and demands that Bennet and his crew be locked away for disobeying orders and treason. Spock overrules Jellico and gives Bennet and his crew the chance.
After a heated discussion in the Council Halls, Bennet and his crew finally prove that the Collector will be used against Ba’ku and not the Briar Patch. With this evidence in place the president is forced to conduct a top level review of the incident. All charges against the crew are dropped and they are allowed to return to Deep Space One. The Collector is towed back to Earth where it is taken apart and its parts used to construct more ships.
