There have been at least four Federation starships to be named USS Defiant.

NCC-1764

The Constitution-class USS Defiant was found in 2268 by the USS Enterprise after it had responded a distress call sent out by the Tholian Assembly. The crew were found dead, apparently at each others hands; the result of a spatial interphase which was pulling the Defiant out of our space time continuum. Following an exhange of phaser fire between the Enterprise and the Tholians, the Defiant was pushed into an alternate universe.

NX-74205

The USS Defiant (NX-74205) was the first in a new line of experimental warships, the vessel assigned to Deep Space Nine was the pathfinder of the Defiant Class - a range of starships typified by overpowered Warp engines and an arsenal seemingly in excess of their small scale. Though originally designed to combat the Borg it was assigned to DS9 following first contact with the Dominion - a hostile race who later invaded Federation space. The Defiant was destroyed in the second battle of Chin'toka after being disabled by the Breen's energy dampening weapon. The Defiant was the first Federation starship to be legally fitted with a Romulan cloaking device, with the understanding that the technology would only be employed in the Gamma Quadrant, and any intelligence gained through its use regarding the Dominion would be shared with the Romulans. Captain Sisko reflected in his log that he broke this agreement on numerous occassions. The existence of the device was a closely-guarded secret; it was not for some years that Starfleet Operations learned of its existence.

NCC-74205-A

The USS Defiant NCC-74205-A was originally named the USS São Paulo with the registry of NCC-75633. However Starfleet gave special dispensation for the Defiant class vessel's change in name following the destruction of the class' pathfinder. Like its forebearer, the new Defiant was assigned to Deep Space Nine under the command of Captain Sisko. The vessel participated in the final battle in the Dominion War; an assualt on Cardassia Prime.

Early in 2376 under the command of Commander Elias Vaughn the vessel went on a six month exploration of the Gamma Quadrant.

During the Borg War command of the vessel was handed to Captain Sisko as he led Federation Allied forces against the Borg Invasions of the Bajoran system. The system had been invaded twice but on both occasions was successfully defended. The Defiant-A was heavily damaged and eventually destroyed by the Borg.

An escape pod found by the USS Enterprise-F in 2401 came from the Defiant-A after the Bajoran Wormhole went through an unusual subspace inversion affect. The pod's only occupier was Captain Sisko (DS1: "Just In Time").

NCC-74205-B

The Defiant-B was launched from Earth Station McKinley on 2nd January 2400 and command is handed to Captain Gabriel Winthorpe. The vessel assists in the re-exploration of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. The vessel re-established contact with Andoria and with the Deltans. Command of the vessel was soon transferred to Captain Claire Swiftcloud in 2401.
