Starfleet Career

2370 to 2378

The following is based on the events that occurred during the television series of Star Trek: Voyager.

Janeway was ordered to become captain of the newly constructed Intrepid Class starship Voyager in 2380, and after preparing herself for a full year in the technical schematics and specifications of her new ship she later assumed command of Voyager in early 2371. From here she led the vessel on its historic seven year mission as it transverse the Delta Quadrant on a journey to return to the Alpha Quadrant.

Originally the ship had been ordered to the Bajoran Badlands where it was to investigate the disappearance of a Maquis vessel, which her security and tactical officer was on undercover among the rebels. The vessel had been pulled in to the Delta Quadrant by a powerful alien called the Caretaker, the Caretaker itself would later bring Voyager in to the distant side of the galaxy. From here the journey of getting home involved Janeway making first contact with more then 150 species and represented the Federation displaying the morals and ideology that she passionately believed in. During her time in the Delta Quadrant she fought battles against the Borg, gaining her experience in dealing with the cybernetic civilisation.

It was in her last moments in the Delta Quadrant that Janeway would command the mission that many historians noted as the biggest victory the Federation had won for its defence against the Borg Collective. In early 2378 with the assistances from a future version of herself, Janeway brought Voyager home via the use of a Borg transwarp hub which connected several conduits from the Delta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant. However the future Janeway, alongside the crew of Voyager also launched an attack that crippled the Borg Collective, allowing the ship to destroy the transwarp network. The destruction of the Borg’s transwarp conduits as well as the destruction of their central unicomplex was a massive achievement in crippling the Borg for good.

2378 to 2380

The following is based on the Star Trek novels set after Voyager’s return to the Alpha Quadrant as well as the events from Star Trek: Nemesis.

Janeway in 2378 along with her crew after arriving back home at Earth were decorated for their actions. She was also promoted by Admiral Owen Paris. Admiral Janeway, along with her former crew that had been split up worked together again and prevented a Borg plague from inflicting Earth. In the same year she promoted her former first officer, Chakotay to the rank of captain and gave him command of Voyager after it received a major overhaul and is re-launched in to service again. Janeway tries her best to get Chakotay’s first choice for his first officer, Tom Paris however is unable to persuade many at Starfleet Command. However after taking Paris under her own wing, just like his own father had done to her years ago. After Voyager’s first mission back in the Alpha Quadrant nearly ends in shambles due to the infiltration of a Changeling, imposing as the ship’s first officer Janeway sends Paris to save the ship and crew. Paris is decorated for his efforts in saving the ship and stopping the Changeling and Janeway is finally able to get him the position of first officer on Voyager.

Also in this year Janeway works with members from the Federation Diplomatic Corps in trying to prevent member states from leaving the Federation because of the Dominion War and its affect it has.

A year later she offers Commander Will Riker his own command in the form of the newly constructed Luna Class vessel USS Titan (NCC-80102). Riker later accepted her offer, and assumed his new assignment on the Titan after Janeway had ordered Captain Jean-Luc Picard, along with the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E) to Romulus to represent the Federation as a peace envoy with the new Praetor, a Reman Shinzon.

In 2380 Admiral Janeway is responsible for re-launching the Enterprise after its mission at Romulus. Picard contacts her after the ship is going through its shakedown cruise and informs her that he hears the songs of the Borg Collective, and is adamant they are still alive even after the admiral’s actions over two years ago crippled them. Janeway at first is unable to believe his words at first, still believing there was no way the Borg could have recovered so quickly after the devastating attack she and her future counterpart inflicted against the Collective. However she recants and orders Picard to wait for Seven of Nine to rendevouz with the Enterprise and to investigate Picard’s claims. Picard though goes against the admiral’s orders and takes the flagship in to battle against a Cube they discover. The Cube itself was not fully operational, and after an enduring fight the Enterprise crew are able to disable the ship and all the drones on board. Janeway informs Picard she is not impressed with his actions in disobeying her orders, citing they could have endured something far worse then Wolf 359. However Janeway orders for a fleet of ships to begin to analyses the remains of the Borg Cube.

These events come from the following novels:

2380 to 2396

The following is based on the events from Star Trek: Futility’s End own history.

Admiral Janeway continues to work on representing the Federation in meetings with member states to prevent them from deciding to leave the Federation. She, alongside other Federation officials meet with representatives from Grazer, and are successful in preventing the Grazerite race from leaving the Federation.

On 2nd May 2382 Janeway finally promoted Tom Paris to the rank of captain and gave him command of the Excelsior Refit Class vessel, USS Archer (NCC-44728). Before the end of the year Paris escorted Janeway and several Federation diplomats on the Archer to a peace summit with the Tzenkethi. During the mission Janeway had been kidnapped by small faction of Tzenkethi officials who didn’t want to agree to the new treaty. She had been freed after Paris was able to devise a rescue operation and sat across the table with Paris and hammered out the new peace treaty. The new treaty resulted in both the Federation and Tzenkethi agreeing to augment trade routes between their peoples.

With the return of the Borg collective in 2383 assaulting various worlds, Janeway was recalled to Earth to assist in coordinating the defence measures to be put in place to fight the collective. Her experiences from the Delta Quadrant, along with those from three years earlier greatly aided in the defence plans. In 2384 she was working in unison with now Admiral Jean-Luc Picard in preparing Starfleet for the battles ahead. By 2395 she was appointed to the position of Director for Starfleet Tactical. The tactics developed under her leadership brought many victories for the Federation Alliance. President Nanietta Bacco in 2398, one of her last presidential acts promoted Janeway to the rank of Fleet Admiral and appointed her to the position of Starfleet Commander in Chief, after Starfleet C-n-C, Fleet Admiral Alynna Nechayev passed away in her sleep.

Janeway in her time as Commander in Chief appointed several officers she had served with in the past against the Borg in to important roles across the fleet. This included appointment of Rear Admiral Tuvok as head of Starfleet Security & Tactical. She also placed Jean-Luc Picard as director of Starfleet Operations. By the end of the year the fleet under her command was redeployed and ready for the upcoming battle that all feared would happen. The Battle of Sol. Before the battle commenced and when the remaining Borg armada was detected approaching Sol, Janeway decided it was time for her to return to actual command of the one ship that she could lead the upcoming fight from. Chakotay, Voyager’s commanding officer for over two decades had stood down months prior to become an ambassador officially transferred command back to Janeway. Janeway also stood down as Starfleet Commander-in-Chief after requesting that President Spock let her led the Federation Alliance from her new flagship. Spock agreed and appointed Picard as the new Starfleet C-n-C.

The Battle of Sol commenced on 23rd December 2398, where Janeway fought on Voyager’s bridge intensely for over two days. However on the 25th December a force of thirteen Tactical Cube broke through the lines and attacked Earth. Janeway led a high number of Dominion vessels to launch a defence, the fight was going well however the remaining Borg Cubes were still hard to defeat. Voyager was able to determine the lead Borg vessel and began an attack run against the Cube as it began to retreat. Wishing to settle an old debt with the Borg Queen, who Janeway knew was on the lead vessel began an attack. The Cube began to take heavy damage under the fleet’s firepower and was able to heavily damage the craft. Voyager was hit hard during this attack, and through after the damaged it had sustained during the rest of the battle Janeway finally ordered for her to abandon the ship. Remaining on board she flew Voyager straight in to the Cube, giving the alliance the chance to destroy the Cube two days later.

Memorial

A statue to remember and celebrate her life’s achievement and work was placed in the ground of Starfleet Command Headquarters in 2400. An award was also dedicated in her memory, the Kathryn Janeway Medal of Distinct Service which was given out to Starfleet officers who have upheld Starfleet ethos and the Federation Charter beyond the call of duty, just like Janeway had done during her time as captain of Voyager and her time as an admiral in the Alpha Quadrant.
