Earth, also referred to as Sol III is the third planet in the Sol System where it is the only M-class body, primary homeworld to Humanity and capital world of the United Federation of Planets, located almost exactly on the division between the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, though the system is recognised as an Alpha location. It has one natural satellite, Luna, referred to simply as "The Moon" from the planet's surface and more scientifically, Sol IIIa.

History

Earth was formed approximately 4.5 bilions years ago, along with the rest of the Sol System. The only intelligent race known to have evolved on Earth are Humans, though reports from the USS Voyager reveal that the Voth scientist Forra Gegen theorises that his species may have evolved on Earth before Humans, from cold-blooded dinosaurs rather than mammals. Earth has recieved a number of extra-terretrial visits since its creation from a variety of species, some of which were originally believed to be gods by Humans. The planet has a violent history, with countless wars, the most costly being three world wars, the last of which saw the deaths of over 600 million Humans before it ended in 2053.

Humanity achieved warp speed in 2063 as Zephram Cochrane broke Warp one with his ship the Phoenix. Shortly after Cochrane landed, the first official contact with alien life occurred as a Vulcan survey team landed in Montana aboard the T'Plana hath, and the years following this proved to be ones of rebuilding, with the first United Earth Government established by the mid 22nd century and in 2161, Earth was one of the founding members of the Federation and provided the location for its central organisation.

There have been numerous attempts to attack Earth since the planet joined the Federation, the most notable success prior to the Borg War being that of the Breen attack on Starfleet Command and San Francisco in 2375. In 2398 during the Battle of Sol, Earth sustained major damage to a number of its major population centres resulting in the deaths of tens of millions of people.

Earth now plays home to a great many different species including a number of aquatic lifeforms, and has a population of almost 15 billion.

Current Political Organisation

There are a number of "super-state" organisations on Earth, such as the United States of America, the European Alliance and the African Confederation. These institutions are subserviant to the United Earth Government, which headquarters are located in New York.

Because Earth is the de facto centre of the Federation, the UEG is often subserviant to the wishes of the Federation Council.
